SMTP Settings Explained

This is an overview showing the fields which are needed for using the less secure, traditional SMTP.

  • SMTP Host: It is the address to the SMTP server of the host.
  • SMTP Port: The common ports for SMTP are 587 and 465, however, hosts can change them. These ports are common to be blocked by the web host, so you should verify with your web host that the required port is open before the beginning.
  • Encryption:  The most widely used encryptions are SSL and TLS. In case you are provided with both by your email provider, then the recommended one is TLS as the TLS encryption is used with port 587, while SSL encryption uses port 465.
  • Authentication: It is required by modern email providers. Usually, most of the email service providers need this functioning.
  • SMTP Username: Usually, your email address for the email provider service is your user name. For some providers, the non-email format is required; for example, if you are using thomas12@provider.com, in this scenario, your username would be thomas12.
  • SMTP Password: It’s your email account password, although this password is not viewable in the settings, it is still stored in the database as plain text because this is needed for establishing the SMTP connection, sending the password in plaintext is needed. Keeping this in mind, it is highly recommended to you to set up your password in the WordPress configuration file named as the wp-config.php for enhanced security.

WHAT IS SMTP: WHY Aren’t Emails Getting Delivered?

SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It is considered an industry standard for sending emails. If the SMTP is configured properly, it contributes to enhancing the email deliverability with the use of authentication. Spammers are the problem for the big email service providers from day one; they look for the origin of the email to be authentic, according to its claim of originating. When an email fails to be authentic origin wise, it will be put in the spam folder, or maybe it is not even delivered to the receiver.

WordPress has a problem from default; as it uses PHP mail function to send WordPress generated emails, what happens is that the majority of WordPress hosting providers do not configure their servers properly for sending PHP emails, thus resulting in poor deliverability of your emails.
