How To Set Up Google Analytics For WooCommerce

The world of online sales is exploding and more customers are looking to increase sales through analytics. One of the top ways to start getting more conversions is through looking at your data with a critical eye. WordPress is one of the most popular platforms for creating online markets and the WooCommerce plugin is a great option for business owners getting setup quickly and easily.

What is WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is an open-source solution for WordPress to help you sell more online. It can be used in a variety of situations ranging from small shops that only offer one product to large stores that have hundreds or even thousands of different SKU options. It was started in 2011 and remains one of the top ways to supercharge your online sales since it is customizable and also free when you download just the base product.

If you want access to themes to customize the look of your store, there are thousands that you can choose from. Extensions also exist written free of charge and open-source. Versatility can be increased even more if you use paid plugins that can add new features and functions to your page. Google Analytics is one of the most important tools that you want to integrate with your store. What is Google Analytics?

An Overview of Analytics

Google Analytics is a free service offered to website owners. It can help you with the following:

  • Insights into how people are browsing your site.
  • Demographics for people that are using your webpage.
  • Bounce rate to see how long sessions are.
  • Show you where customers are coming from.

As you can see, all of this is very powerful information. Google Analytics is in use by some of the largest companies on the planet to try and harness this information to increase sales and better serve customers. Setting up Analytics

It is simple and easy to start an analytics account. Log in to your Google account and use a search engine to look for Google Analytics.

Once you arrive on the Welcome page, take a look around at all the advantages that analytics can give you. Once you are familiar with the service, click on Set up for free. 

On this new page, enter in the name of your site as well as the URL that you want to start tracking. This will be the address customers use to access your store.

Once this is finished, click next and it will bring you to the dashboard. Make sure you are already logged in as the administrator for this account. From here, click on the icon that looks like a gear. This will allow you to access administrator settings.

From here, the admin screen will allow you to access a large variety of options. You will be able to create new accounts for users and restrict their access to only things that you allow. You also can create new properties or views. Make sure you always have your raw data view that is not altered so that you have the true information you need before you start filtering it using different dimensions and metrics.

On the far right, you will see a category called views. Scroll down until you can see Ecommerce settings. We need to enable a few things here before we can get started with integrating this with your WooCommerce site.

Enabling Ecommerce Analytics

Once you have clicked on the Ecommerce settings, you will see two slider bars. Both of these should be switched over to on.

The second slider bar will turn on enhanced Ecommerce reports which will give you more options and data to look at. Below these sliders, you will notice a place where you can label steps in the funnel. By labeling each step in your sales funnel with a name that is easy to remember, you can check and see where you might be losing customers. If it seems like a majority of customers stop during a certain step in the process, you can have this updated and see if your conversions will increase.

At this point in the process, if you are also using the plugin from MonsterInsights, you can enable enhanced Ecommerce reporting there as well. MonsterInsights is a great tool that will allow you to easily review analytics coming in from Google so that you can act on it quickly and maximize your sales. Analytics is now active.

Tracking ROI

With Analytics now active for your store, you will have a better idea of your ROI or return on investment. You can do the following to make sure you are getting the most from your advertising dollars.

  • See which ads are performing the best.
  • Do A/B testing between creative ad sets to compare returns.
  • Find out which products are popular and which ones you should promote more.

It is important to make sure you are promoting the right products once you begin spending large amounts of money on ads. For even small online stores, the ad spend dollars can reach several thousand dollars each day when you use marketing through Facebook or other online social sites. With a successful ad, the dollars spent on ads will be overshadowed by profits from products sold, but owners must still keep a close eye on the analytics to make sure that valuable data is being collected. Sorting Visitors

Sifting through your visitors will now be much easier as well as you have all the data from people coming to your store. Dimensions can be compared to see what part of the country they are streaming in from, or even if you have international customers. Your analytics will also tell you which browser these users currently have which can also provide further insight. Web pages will not all appear the same when you look at them on different browsers. If you see a high bounce rate for a certain browser, you can be sure that your site is appearing in a different way that you did not intend.

Metrics can also be compared with each other including how many times a form was filled out or which pages are clicked on the most. Once you start to really measure everything on the website and assign numbers to goals you are trying to hit, you will find it much easier to achieve specific milestones.

You launch the ebook with a clever form that pops up right when the visitor comes to a specific page on your site. When looking at Google Analytics, it seems that visitors are not filling out the form. Your metrics are low and the numbers are not matching with what you envisioned. How can you make the needed changes?

Making Changes Based on Data

Looking at your metrics for downloads of your new ebook, you quickly learn that your approach needs to be shifted. Take a snapshot of the data where your form was set up one way and then change what visitors see. First you might change the color of the form or the graphic that is attached to it. After several weeks of analysis, compare your new form with the data you had previously. In this scenario, there is still no increase in downloads so you set out to change your approach yet again.

Google analytics makes it easy to look at data over certain time periods so you can constantly compare and see what kind of approach works best to meet your metrics. Armed with more information about what customers did not respond to, you use a form plugin for WordPress to adjust when the popup will appear. Instead of immediately bombarding the customer from the outset, you give them a chance to look around the site first and get comfortable. Once they have passed a certain threshold while scrolling down, the popup will trigger and then the visitor will decide if they want to download the free ebook or not.
