SiteGround vs. Bluehost

SiteGround vs. Bluehost

A reliable host is worth a lot. You can have over ten thousand dollars invested into designing your site along with thousands of dollars of content, but if people can’t access the site, it won’t be worth anything. The best host is one that has solid uptime so you won’t have to worry about customers accessing your store. There are other factors to consider as well though. What is the price? How fast are the upload and download speed?

For this article, we took two of the top hosts and put them head to head. Which one is better when looking at Siteground and Bluehost?

The Advantages of Siteground

Siteground is an excellent host with a variety of tiers to choose from depending on what level of service you need. Their customer service response is on point with around the clock help from experts. With years of experience, they can guide you through setting up a WordPress site or even help you make changes to your online store. As noted before, the uptime for a host is one of the most important factors since nobody can see a website that is going down constantly. What is the uptime like for Siteground?

Siteground Uptime

Siteground Uptime

Looking at what other reviewers posted and our own experience, the uptime with Siteground is well above average. When compiling data, the numbers were pulled from a full two years. By sampling several years, it gives a more accurate idea of what you can expect from the service. If a review was only concerned with the service for a few months, it might skew the data.

When looking at the raw data, users reported 99.99% uptime. That is very close to perfect which is difficult to do in the world of hosting. An average host might have uptime that totals up to 99.93% or 99.92%. Siteground is well beyond what you would find with your average host which explains their popularity and also why so many customers flock to them.

All of these figures were done with Pingdom which is an excellent tool that you can experiment with for free. Use Pingdom to put together waterfall charts that will show you where you are loading in slowly.

Bluehost Uptime

Bluehost Uptime

Bluehost is another host that began to become more popular due to their attention to detail and constant advertising. This host has excellent deals with sponsors and many content creators enjoy promoting the site for the excellent commissions that they pay. How is the uptime for Bluehost in comparison with Siteground?

Using similar stipulations on testing, the uptime for Bluehost is well above average as well. While a host that is just part of the median might have uptime amounting to 99.93%, Bluehost was well above the median. After adding up the data, they came in at 99.98%. It is hard to find a host that has perfect uptime since mechanical failures do happen and servers need to be replaced at times. We can say safely that Bluehost is well above what other hosts can provide and that makes them an outlier with their uptime figures.

When you do the math, an uptime figure of 99.98% comes out to only an hour and forty five minutes per year where you won’t have service. If you think about that, the figure is even more impressive.

Uptime Compared

As previously stated, both of these hosts are popular for exceeding expectations. Siteground wins out the uptime competition with a faction of a percentage point. This difference in uptime is very small though and really only translates to having a few more minutes of uptime on a monthly basis. Bluehost still has a very good showing with 99.98% so you should not let this figure sway you away from the service.

Pricing for Siteground

How does the pricing for each service compare to each other?

How many tiers does Siteground have?

Siteground has several tiers to pick from depending on your needs. With the lowest tier, you only pay $3.95 each month. The regular price once adjusted will move up to just under $12.00 for the month. When you get the lowest tier, you will have access to one website that you choose and ten gigs of space.

As long as you have a site that is simple with a low amount of data, ten gigs and 10k visits will be fine. If you start to have a successful business though, you will need to move up to their next tier. This is named GrowBig and it comes in at just $5.95 for the introductory price. Once the promotion ends, you can expect to pay just under twenty dollars per month. Still an excellent deal once the price goes up.

With the mid tier service, you now have access to unlimited sites. This is one of the most popular features since it is just a few dollars more to get unlimited. You will also double the space you have access to and have up to 25K visitors. If you run a busy Ecommerce store, you are going to need access to more visits to keep up with demand.

The Highest Tier

What does the highest tier look like for Siteground? The price starts at $11.95 and will move up to $34.95 once the promotion ends. Most sites will not need to go all the way to the highest tiers since it comes with 100,000 visits each month. If you are seeing this kind of traffic and you are running ads on your site, you will easily be able to cover the monthly fee that they charge each month. Considering the amount of visits you are getting for the price, this is an awesome deal to check out once your business hits this level of notoriety.

Pricing with Bluehost

What does the pricing look like with Bluehost when compared with what you get when you pick Siteground?

Which tier is best for Bluehost?

Looking at the lowest tier with Bluehost, you will immediately notice a difference when compared with a similar tier from Siteground. The Basic tier is just $2.95 each month for the introductory offer. The normal price is just under four dollars which is a small increase. When you get the lowest tier, you can access one website along with 50 gigs of data for your site. Not only that, but the data will be on the SSD. This means with a Solid State Drive, things will load a lot faster than your standard drive.

You will also get unmetered bandwidth which means that they will not cap how much data you can transmit. Bluehost does not have the same limitation on the number of visitors that you see with Siteground. That is a huge relief for people that are worried about a sudden jump in users. What if you do social media marketing and you have a post that goes viral? Do you really want to have the number of visitors capped out when it could be your chance to make huge sales numbers?

The Highest Tier for Bluehost

When looking at the highest tier for Bluehost with this set of stipulations, once again you will notice that the price is much lower than what you pay for with Siteground. There are no caps on how many visitors can come to the site on a monthly basis. You will also have access to unlimited websites and also unlimited domains.

Once again like with the lower tiers, you will have access to SSD memory for storing everything. Solid State Drives will make sure that things don’t lag when you need a quick response to things. Think about the differences between having a slow standard drive compared to an SSD when you have your personal computer. If you restart the computer with a normal drive, it can take several minutes for everything to shut down and then come back up. When you are using a SSD, the shift from completely off to coming back online fully is done much faster. When things go wrong, do you want to have your site struggling to keep up when customers are waiting?

Better Deals with Bluehost

Another thing to keep in mind is that Bluehost has offered better deals in the past for their highest tier. Past deals gave you a marketing budget for two hundred dollars. That is significant if you are trying to start up a new business. Will Bluehost bring back the free marketing? Only the future can say, but those that really need to save on marketing may want to wait and see if the marketing budget comes back.

Both hosts have their advantages and disadvantages. Siteground was able to show a better uptime when compared with Bluehost, but Bluehost has many more tiers to choose from. The pricing for Bluehost was also much cheaper when comparing the different tiers and allowed for as many visitors as needed. If you plan on having any content go viral soon, Bluehost might be the best choice. Siteground has one of the best uptime ratios that we have seen and should be considered strongly if you are looking to make sure your site is always up.
